Sharon Billinge
Artist Statement:
I am an exhibiting artist and am currently represented by Dickerson Gallery in Richmond.
I specialise in the realistic representation of the figure and in particlular hands. The figures and hands in my work twist towards or around abstracted areas in an attempt to touch them. Some are seeking and grasping, others have found a point of balance.
In some of my work I choose to draw with silver. The technique of silverpoint forces the artist to spend a long time layering fine lines of delicate silver to build up tonal variation. This is an ancient way of drawing and the precious nature of the silver and the technical difficulty of this method appeals to me.
Role at Art Encounters:
Sharon has had an extensive history of teaching in higher institutes of education both in England and here in Melbourne. Sharon is an excellent teacher of painting and drawing. In 2008 she will be teaching the Drawing and Painting of the Nude workshop, the Wednesday Teenage workshop and the Drawing and Painting Studio class (Concession group).
