Cerise Ward

Artist Statement:

My current paintings feature male figures on intense red backgrounds. My interest came from a concern with masculinity and its construction and representation. The human head is dominant in my drawings. I use the head as a vehicle to express an intensity of observation. The drawings are about conveying commitment and involvement, culminating in an expressive, sculptural and vulnerable image.

I was born in Preston, Lancashire in the UK, and obtained a B.A Hons degree from Bradford University specialising in drawing and painting in 1997. Since my degree I have worked as a full time lecturer teaching life drawing, fine art and visual studies at colleges in the North West of England, whilst continuing to develop and exhibit my work in solo and group exhibitions.

At The beginning of 2005 I emigrated to Melbourne where I have continued to maintain my own drawing, painting practice and commissioned work. I currently teach painting at Beaumaris Art Group, Art Encounters and Holmesglen TAFE.

Role at Art Encounters:

Cerise teaches the Beginner and Intermediate courses in Drawing and Painting for Beginners on Thursday's during the day. Her classes are extremely popular with students enrolling to do a second year with her following 2007.
